Snow Day

Today, I am home. School is closed. It’s a snow day and indeed it’s aptly named for snow falls fast and furious. Although a teacher of 25 years, I still anticipate and feel the thrill of that early morning phone call – school is canceled!! Said feeling prompted this poem, a simple smidge of innocence.

Snow Day

These children,
for a day
free from the teacher’s

whip and harness,
graze the space
between trees,

soft, in puffy coats,
deep reds and blues.
Children darting, twirling,

as if to hear each flake,
winter’s sprites,
whisper its name

before it discovers sleep
on the forest floor.
