Tread Lightly

Tread Lightly

Large rocks
that have seemed
to tumble away
from mountain perches,

perhaps, haven’t tumbled at all.
Boulders, the type that tempt
one to scale their crusty hides,
resting in pools of woodland shade,

aren’t, in my estimation,
boulders at all, but dragons
who, in some forgotten age,
settled down to sleep,

each beast enchanting itself
to slumber beneath
a magic skin of crust and crag.
So, tread lightly,

planting your steps as gently
as you’d plant a crop of buttercups,
until you’re able to rest an ear
against this itchy husk.

Listen, you may just hear
the music of a mighty heart.
