The Birch Tree’s Shadow

I like this one…a lot.

Tree Shadows 2

The Birch Tree’s Shadow

It creeps
up
the red brick,

over
the window’s sill,

into the house,
sidles across
the kitchen tiles

where I’ve spilled
the wine,

a pool
as rich
as blood.

  1. This one sounds more sinister than your revision. It is the reference to blood and the creeping going on so slowly that gives it that “impending woe” feeling. On the other hand, birch trees don’t bear fruit, so the last line of the revised version doesn’t sit as well as this ending.
    Picky, picky. 🙂
