Souvenir

These words were scratched in my journal, without edit or revision. I tentatively share them here.

Souvenir

I snap an icicle
that’s sprouted
from the porch rail,
a tooth from its gum.

Like a tooth
tucked beneath
a pillow, a token
for a stealthy sprite,
it will be taken,
enveloped by my palm,
a few moments
of warmth.

So too a day is stolen,
as melted ice.
Quickly, it is lost
and we are left
with cold hands
and memory.
