Morning Train

I’m a writing/literature professor at Passaic County Community College. The college’s main campus is in Paterson, New Jersey, an environment far different from hills of Sussex County, where my home rests, hills filled with trees and bears, meadows and cows. Generally, I write about those hills; for me, each knoll is filled with magic, but sometimes, Paterson shimmers with magic too.

Morning Train

The morning train,
screeching,
Jurassic,

lumbers between
the brown bricks rising,
over hot roads,

broken glass,
sharp snaps of light,
near the old men –

sweat glinting,
on their dark faces.
