A Lament

This morning’s post and poem, Birth, led me to this piece.

Dark forest - dark, goth, forest, fantasy, night

A Lament

Children must never grow up.
Who will care for the dragons?

Thin, gray
lines of smoke
rise from its nostrils,
tangle in the birch’s

white branches,
lost ribbons
twisted
by a moment’s wind…

The flame that once
cushioned its heart
has grown cold;
its cold heart

no longer bars
the night.
