Crickets: the Brevity of Breath

For the past several days, Northern New Jersey has been unusually warm for late October. Last night, our windows were wide open and cricket song choked the humid night air.

Crickets

Crickets scratch
the night with song,
web the dark

between tree limbs
with hop and flight,
bounding

for broad leaves
where each perch,
chrip meditations

and philosophies:
the weight of air,
the breavity of breath,

until dawn
banishes
all to shadow.
