In a Hush as Thick As Water

In a Hush as Thick as Water

The bowman,
wrapped in shadow,
lets slip
his arrow

through the cool
that gathers
under
the forest boughs,

its feathers
splashing the light
dripping
from broad leaves;

its edge,
as keen as ice,
slitting
the doe’s flank,

muscle and warmth
slicked
beneath an offering
of blood.
