National Poetry Month – Day 6

For today’s prompt, readers of the Poetic Asides Blog have been challenged to write an ekphrastic poem. An ekphrastic poem is a poem inspired by art.

The painting posted here is  Hugo Possner, Apples and Box Still Life, 1912. Why did I chose apples? Why did I chose these apples? Read my poem. It’s simple and perhaps unimpressive, but the image inspired a thought and the thought made me smile.

Thanks.

Hugo Possner, Apples and Box Still Life, 1912

The Apples

Like children
spilling
from school

into the possibilities
of afternoon,
they tumble

from their box,
tripping, each cheek
red: rucus and holler.
