A Kiss

A Kiss

The pine boughs, with their long needles,
bob up and down, touched by the day’s wind,
a tired eye struggling to stay open,

long lashes blinking at the birdbath
standing near the drooping forsythia
like a skinny man topped

with a broad, silly hat, silent and still,
wondering if he should wink as well,
smile, and perhaps blow the afternoon a kiss.
