Walking Home from School

I want to write a Christmas poem, a winter poem…

Walking Home from School

She stands before
the snowman,
looking up

just as she looks
up at her teacher,
Mrs. Levoy,

but the snowman
seems kinder,
a row of black rocks

curves into his smile.
She winks and waits.
One of those eyes,

two black checkers,
will wink back soon enough,
she knows it will,

but it’s getting dark
and the cold air,
the terrible air.
