Where the Shadows Grow

I took this picture several years ago. Looking at it today, a few words came to mind. I share them here.

Where the Shadows Grow

The cardinal,
red crest capping
its head as flame,

hops from branch
to branch,
rising

through the thorns
with the confidence
of fire,

rising
from the dark weave,
into the air

under the pine trees
where the shadows grow.

      1. I have two favorites out of “Private Hercules McGraw” so far. But I’m beta reading a manuscript at the moment and stealing bits of time here and there to read your book. That’s good, though, as I don’t feel like hurrying through it. Having been to Gettysburg a couple times and seeing so much at the visitors center there (including videos) I’m really “seeing” this story, too.
