The Tomatoes We Failed to Pick

This morning, while making coffee, I spent a few moments looking out of the kitchen window, as I often do, into the backyard. There, I noticed the ruins of what was a wonderful summer garden. Here are my impressions.

The Tomatoes We Failed to Pick

The tomatoes
we failed to pick
lay broken,

bleeding,
a galaxy
of dead planets.

Crows,
black grackles,
descend

from the skies,
living constellations,
filching seeds,

rising again,
the lost hope
of civilizations

pinched within
their black beaks.
