To Capture Light

Earlier, today, I wrote about the tribulations of morning. Here’s a piece that will usher me back to bed, back to sleep.

Bouquet

The flowers…
the red ones
in the glass vase

beneath
the dining room chandelier –
there stems have softened.

Like an old woman’s spine,
they’ve begun to bend.
Each bloom, still bold

and rich, heavy with beauty
no longer strives
to capture light,

rootless, submissive.
Death is right.
