In the Cool Air

Here’s an ode, of sorts, to autumn. My inspiration? Beats me!!

I Saw Autumn

I saw autumn
pecking seed
off the dusty earth

beside the rail fence.
When the dog barked
and the rusted, green Ford,

heavy with hay, blew a tire,
the old bird darted
over the grass,

scratchy and brown,
into winter,
its tail feathers,

auburn and gold,
tumbling, whirling
in the cool air.
