Revise, Revise, Revise

Here is a revision of the poem shared in my last post. It matured. Perhaps it still needs a bit more. The fishing I did today, in the pond pictured here, helped guide my revision.

As Children

We stretched
the great oak,

where the dry
leaves fell,
beneath the hornets’

nest hanging,
a gray heart,
humming, heavy

with diligence
and poison;
we tossed acorns

into the branches
above, wondered
which one

might tap
the nest,
and disturb

the world
to send us

toward the pond
where the marsh grass

grew thick
and green,

by the songs
of our laughter
and fear.
