On the Brink of Summer

Northern New Jersey, home, has been hot this week. Temperatures have consistently reached the 90’s. Said heat inspired this poem  ————————

Deep in June

The sun
spreads
its heat upon

the meadow,
upon the itchy pines,
the stones

clustered as turtles
cluster…
it spreads

its heat
upon the afternoon
like thick paint

as gnomes scuttle
through the tall grass
hefting acorn shells

top full of water.
The wildflowers,
yellow and white,

swaying above their
heads are thirsty;
they are thirsty.
