Tomorrow’s Poem

Perhaps I’m getting ahead of myself.

Tomorrow’s Poem

Today, I’m considering the poem
I’ll write tomorrow. Already, I know
it will be far better than this one.
It’s obvious, today’s poem lacks

the proper spice. It longs
for a wizard wielding spells
that transform feathers,
fallen from the bosom of a worn pillow,

into griffins or winged stallions
that hoist adventurous boys
to the heavens, prancing
from cloud to cloud. It yearns

for the music of carousels,
the aroma of buttered popcorn
popping near caramel
slowly melting in a vat

where a line of rascals
waits for permission to dip
apples that gleam as red as Valentines.
Tomorrow’s poem will shimmer

as newly polished armor;
it will sing as a harp sings,
lacing a morning with silken
strands of music and taste

as sweet as chocolate.
Tomorrow is a day for poetry.
